Subscribe on Substack “Rossy, are you home?” my neighbour Hauwa asked over the phone. “Yeah, I just got back. Are you alright?” “Yes, but I have a new mum who called for help, crying. She gave birth two weeks ago and lives close by. Can you check in on her? I am off to work in a few minutes.” I...

“Mum, you know I can now walk to school and back by myself.” My 9-year-old reminded me for the umpteenth time, the night before school resumed for the session. “Yeah, I know,” I replied. “I’m thinking about it…” “Oh no, Mum!” he protested. He knows that “I’m thinking about it” is my classic line when I don’t want to commit. I smiled as I looked at the baby of yesterday, now seeking independence today. 😄 Later that week, his dad agreed to let him try the 7-minute walk home. But of course, he...

I had an 'I saw my ancestors' moment Literally😂😂😂. In the 3 minutes it lasted, I shut my eyes tight and kept saying to myself: “If I fall now, my people will say, ‘na me carry my hand go buy market.’” A few days ago, we visited a location famous for all the high rides you can imagine. I’ve always laughed and enjoyed the sight whenever I watch people in movies screaming but looking so joyful on high rides. So, I thought, let me try. Big mistake. 😂 My intestines tumbled again and again, my...

The terms of the agreement were perfect, and both men shook hands, smiling with relief. The meeting between Boss Lee and Mr. Jay had been long and tense, a conversation long overdue. Boss Lee was a sweet talker, skilled at sealing deals that always favoured him and his business. He could string people along for years, and that’s exactly what he’d done with Mr. Jay… until Mr. Jay had finally had enough. This very meeting between Mr. Jay — aka Jacob — and Boss Lee — Laban is recorded in Genesis...

What are your plans for the summer? My friend asked Didi, my ever-expressive 13-year-old. “Oh, we’ll go to the movies, the park, have sleepovers, bake, go on a road trip… and my friends and I also plan to…” Didi’s the kind of child who can hold a conversation for an hour without tiring. As I listened, I laughed. My summer had already been planned without my input 😄 But her excitement reminded me of something: This is that time of year when I pause, count my blessings, and create room for...

I got an early birthday gift from my husband. It was something I’d longed for over the last two years. No, I didn’t ask or pressure him to buy it. I just hoped I’d eventually get around to buying it in the fullness of time😊 . So, when he got it for me and proudly called it an early birthday gift (I’m a July baby) Let me just say, I was blown away. By the intent. The sacrifice. The fact that he ignored all my “let’s wait” speeches, delayed gratification and all and firmly told me “You deserve...

I spent this past weekend in the company of eight amazing women, aged 45 to 75. That is what they call intergenerational connection (I just learned the term, lol). We travelled together to a women’s conference. Ate together, worshipped together, lodged in the same beautiful hotel. However, the memorable part of this trip was the after-meal conversations. The gist. The laughter. The teasing. The jokes that made our bellies ache and eyes teary. You see, they were not exactly strangers, as we...

“Hello ma, I just want to rant… I am not happy with my job. It feels like this job is meant to frustrate me.” The staff I’m meant to lead won’t listen to me or respond to anything I say. My boss doesn’t tell me anything directly; instead, I hear updates from the lady who’s been working with her longer than I have. And I’m supposed to be her second-in-command. There’s no structure here, and I’m getting so stressed. Please ma, how can I maintain my sanity while looking for another job?” This...
